Cupcake (above right) is a Nigerian goat who was rescued from a local farm several years ago. Sadly, the farm had a practice of leaving their pregnant goats outside in the winter to “toughen them up,” which meant that many babies were born in the cold and snow and did not survive. Cupcake had already lost several babies and was again pregnant when MFS found out about her and convinced the farm to let us take her in.
Since Cupcake had been bred with a much larger Nubian goat, her babies were very large and she had a difficult birth. At one point she became so exhausted that she simply stopped pushing, and Cheri had to help pull the babies out. Sadly, one of the babies had a heart problem and passed away at two years of age. The other one, named Raven (above left), still lives with Cupcake at MFS.
Cupcake is elderly and has difficulty chewing, so Cheri makes her a special plate of fresh produce each night so that she can get the nutrients she needs. Both Cupcake and Raven are fairly timid but are also curious—they can most often be seen snuggling up together and peering out at visitors from behind the fence surrounding our upper goat barn.
Cupcake passed away in August 2021.
