These two sister goats came to MFS from a small local sanctuary that unfortunately did not know how to properly care for the animals who lived there. Since they did not neuter their male goats, a female goat got pregnant and gave birth to two babies. The first-time mother had difficulty nursing the two goats, and the sanctuary called MFS for help. We agreed to take the two babies on a permanent basis and spent several weeks bottle feeding them.
In addition, MFS found out that staff at the other sanctuary had attempted to dehorn the goats, a cruel procedure in which a goat’s horns are removed, usually with a cauterizing iron, so that they are cannot attack others or get caught on fences (much like declawing a cat). The staff did a very poor job, and as a result the goats' horns grew in twisted and uneven.
We named the goats the “Twisted Sisters” in reference to their horns and as a homage to the rock metal band Twisted Sister, as the two goats have been known to display somewhat feisty and rebellious attitudes. The sisters are curious about human visitors but often prefer to be curled up together.
The sisters have both passed away.
